Department Overview
The Utility Billing Department
is under the direction of the Finance Director, with the Utility
Billing/Accounting Supervisor assisting. The department
consists of 4 employees and is directly responsible for Meter Reading, Billing
and Customer Service.
Utility Billing Office
The Utility Billing Office is located on the first floor of City Hall and is
responsible for handling all applications for water, sewer and garbage service
for locations inside the City limits, as well as water service in the areas
where we provide service outside the City limits. The
Customer Account Specialists handle an average of 2,000 walk-in customers
monthly, receive approximately 2,500 customer telephone calls covering areas
from information requests, billing questions, complaints of high water
consumption, etc., to requests for emergency services for repairs.
They issue an average of 500 work orders each month and process over 100
new service applications monthly.
Meter Reading Department
The Meter Reading Department is
responsible for the monthly reading of over 7,000 water meters using an
electronic meter reading device called a mobile collector. When all
the meter readings for a cycle are completed, the readings are downloaded to the
main computer for calculation and billing. The meter reader
also handles all work orders issued by the Customer Service Office for re-reads,
leak checks, turn-ons and cut-offs, as well as the routine penalty cut-offs and
reconnects for delinquent accounts.
Billing Department
The Billing Department is responsible for processing the meter readings,
preparing billing registers, and verifying them for accuracy before printing and
mailing the monthly statements for our current utility customer base of
approximately 6,500 accounts. The billing cycle is broken
into four mailings each month and bills are processed and mailed on a weekly
basis.
To facilitate easy access to this and other City departments, our offices are
located on the main floor of Avon Park City Hall, 110 East Main Street.
Handicapped access is provided from the rear parking lot.
Office hours are Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m.
and 5:00 p.m.
Please contact the Utility Billing Department at 863-452-4433 with any
